Biere de Mars (Lips of Faith series)

I had a sampler of this beer at the New Belgium brewery just a few weeks ago. I was surprised at what I got. I expected a dark, intensely sour beer. What I got was a pretty light, VERY subtly soured Belgian ale. I’ve had this bottle sitting in my fridge for between 1 and 2 years (I don’t know exactly), but I’m hoping that the Brett has developed a bit and introduced some more intense sourness to the ale.
Brett beers are wont to be highly carbonated, and this is no exception if the picture didn’t tip you off. Leaves splotchy, finely bubbled lacing. Pretty!
If my recollection of a few weeks ago is correct, this does indeed seem to have developed a bit more tartness than is typical for this beer when drank freshly bottled. Has that trademark lemon verbena scent that I also got out of Stone’s IPA Anniversary special edition. Lots of sour apple scent.
Definitely has the flavor of a Belgian and quite a bit of that tart apple. Some breadiness and yeastiness.
This beer is disappointing only in that it markets itself as a Brett sour beer. There little to no Brett character in this beer unfortunately. It’s not a bad beer, just not what I was hoping it would be.
